Grab your Hat and Read with the Cat!

Read Across America 2013-
In celebration of NEA's Read Across America and Theodore Giesel's birthday on March 2, Mrs. O'Risky's readers are logging 1 mile per book point, leaving from the Statue of Liberty, and heading to the Golden Gate Bridge! We obtain "miles" by reading books and testing well on them.
Grab the map and move it around to see our markers. Click on each marker on the map to see who is driving, reading, testing, and where we are today! We are expected to begin on Feb. 1 and arrive in California on March the 1st.

This is a really cool idea. I could see myself using it in Geography - maybe a race across the Sahara or something. I am going to have to learn how you are doing that!

What a great idea to give students a visual depiction of how reading "gets them somewhere"! I love this idea! This would be a great year-long activity to let students read their way through their own journey anywhere in the world. I would include "nautical miles", too, so they could travel off the continent!

Emily DiSabella-
I LOVE LOVE LOVE this idea! I think that having students work together to achieve a common goal is a great way to bring a classroom together! In a large class or a high grade level, you could even form teams as the students race from one side of the map to the other- assigning mini lessons as they reach certain destinations!
What a great way to entice students to read!

Such a great idea! Every year I run a "Readathon" that is held near Dr. Seuss's birthday and themed on his books. It's for NEA's Read Across America as well. This year it would be neat to make the theme related to Geography to spice things up. We get anywhere from 80-150 kids so it may need some tweaking. Thanks for sharing! ~ Jen Kroesen
